Physical training

Introduction
Many athletes, with the ambition to reach the top, will start with more sports specific hours (= in his own sport). Any athlete, with the ambition to make the most out of his / her sports career, has an additional benefit from additional training in fundamental movement (mobility/stability) and athleticism (strength, endurance and speed). Not only to support and improve sport specific performance, but also to prevent injuries.

VU Sports Centre (SVU) offers players of Tennis Academy Amsterdam full support in physical training, in addition to sport specific training. VU Sports Centre is part of the Free University and collaborates with the Faculty of Human Movement Sciences at the VU(under the name Sport Science Unit). Many employees are scientifically trained and have extensive experience in coaching athletes at all levels and with different objectives.

The vision of Sport Centre VU is displayed in the figure below:

  Sportspecific

      Athletic ability

     Fundamental movement

This pyramid represents the optimal conditions for the athlete. Fundamental movement stands for mobility and stability, athletic ability for strength, endurance and speed, and sport specific for the sport specific skills and levels. These three aspects of movement needs to be trained in a balanced and proper way.

Weaknesses and asymmetries in fundamental movement disables the improvement of athleticism and sport specific ability. Furthermore this will result in compensations by the body which result in a greater chance of injuries.

When fundamental movement forms a sufficiently broad basis, the athletic ability can be safely and optimally trained. A sufficiently developed athletic ability is finally a prerequisite for optimal development of sport specific skills.

VU Sports Centre focuses on the guidance of players of the TAA to test / measure and train, especially the lower two levels, fundamental movement and athletic ability.

Sportcentrum VU richt zich in het begeleidingstraject van de spelers van de TAA op het testen/meten en het trainen van vooral de onderste 2 lagen, Fundamenteel bewegen en Atletisch vermogen.

4 tests a year
The players are tested four times a year by the team of the sports center. The tests are aimed to follow the progress / development of the athletes over time, to compare athletes and to adjust training programs as specific as possible for the players.

Logbook (Optional)
A possible component in the guidance is keeping a logbook containing all training activities and matches, a significant number of health variables and periodic screening of mental status. It only takes a few minutes a day. The log book will increase the awareness of the athletes of the impact of their total efforts on the performance in all the areas.

Moreover, for the support staff it is a tool monitor the progress of the athlete, but also to guard for putting too much efforts in their different trainings.

The log book is also the place where all test results are recorded, evaluated in a understandable story for the athlete. Furthermore the results and progress will will be used to set new training goals.
